Snapshots of Russian Maslenitsa

Pancake Week (Maslenitsa - it was mentioned in the previous post) ended with "Forgiveness Sunday" (the day people ask each other forgiveness - an old tradition) and the outdoor celebrations in our city. Here there are some photos that can show the spirit of this Russian holiday. And is there any holiday in American culture that symbolizes the end of winter and coming of spring as Maslenitsa does in Russia?

  1. Great pictures! That festival looks like a lot of fun. The two holidays we celebrate near this time are St. Patrick's Day and Easter... none that really symbolize the ending of winter though.

  2. That looks like a lot of fun! We had groundhog day back in February. It's not a real holiday but its a tradition surrounded by folklore which is celebrated every year. Most people don't actually celebrate the event but its something many people are aware of. Each year the groundhog comes out and if he sees his shadow and runs back into his burrow then we will have winter for six more weeks, if he does not see his shadow we will have an early spring. This doesn't really predict the weather, but its a cute tradition.

  3. We heard about Groundhog day from the movie of the same title shot in 1993 with Bill Murray))) Is it celebrated in one particular place (town, state) or thoughout the country?

  4. That movie is a classic!
The ceremony is celebrated in one town in pennsylvania, but it is televised so people throughout most of the country are able to watch it if they want to.
