Hi students in Fredonia and Tomsk. We have set up this blog in hopes of getting students from Tomsk State and SUNY Fredonia together. We though popular culture would be a fun and easy topic to talk about.

Did you watch the Oscar Awards ceremony? Did you like it? Which were your favorite movies this year?

  2. I didn't have a chance to watch Oscar as it was the beginning of my working day in Russia and I were busy. But I followed the ceremony by radio - they announced new Oscar winners every 30 minutes. I liked Mrs. Obama's appearence in the ceremony - I believe it showed that the government cares for cinema. Some Oscar-winning movies like Argo or Lincoln I included into my 'to-watch' list. And I'm pleased for Ann Hathaway - her acting in Les Miserable was rather powerful, I think.

  3. I didn't watch it, I don't think it is interesting and voices real opinion of people. From list of movies I watched Django Unchained and Argo, but in my opinion these movies are not for Oscar.

  4. I watched Argo for the first time last night. It was typical hollywood - both good and bad. The movie had a great story line but one can't take a lot of what they showed as "real." What I found very interesting was that the CIA's role was classified until 1997 so almost no one knew it happened.

  5. I haven't seen any of the films that were nominated for best picture but I watched the Oscars anyway. I really like seeing all the actresses and their dresses and who makes the worst and best dressed list. My favorite part of the Oscars this year was when Mark Wahlberg and Ted (the animated teddy bear) presented I thought that was very funny and cool.

  6. I haven't seen Argo yet, but it is currently on my 'to watch' list. I was extremely excited to see that the theme of the Oscars this year was, Music in Movies. Music always conveys powerful emotions and sometimes help describe what words can't. I especially liked the performance by the cast of Les Mis, i thought it was extremely powerful and beautiful. I was so happy that Anne Hathaway won for her role as Fantine in Les Mis, i though she was incredible. Unfortunately, i always find the Oscars to be full of movies i had never seen or heard of. In a way i feel like the general public isn't aware or knowledgeable about the movies being presented for awards. Yet, it still receives a large audience due to the actors and such.

  8. I did not end up watching the Oscars, because I honestly did not know they were on.

However, I agree with Susan about Les Miserables. I found it was incredibly moving and I was extremely impressed with the fact that the actors and actresses sang live while filming. Instead of singing afterwards in a studio. The only thing that bothers me about the movie and at the same time I find funny. Is the fact that the two male leads, Jean Valjean and Javert were both played by Australians. The story was written by Victor Hugo, a French author, and takes places in France. Yet all the actors were from various English speaking countries. I wonder what the French think of Les Miserables.

  9. Interesting thought Monika. I used to love Dr. Zhivago with Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. It was an American movie about Russian Revolution based on a book by Boris Pasternak (Russian). When I see it now I think how odd it is to have all of these American actors playing Russians. I wonder what a Russian audience thinks of Dr. Zhivago.
